There are many competing brands in the mobile network and internet service provider industries around the world. It is a fierce competition that caused many companies to either merge with others of either equal or bigger size. In the UK alone, there are at least fifteen companies competing with each other for a slice of the UK market pie. However, there are only at least four that are major providers: 3, O2, Orange, T-mobile and Vodaphone.
France Telecom recently purchased Orange UK, and teamed up with T-mobile with the hope of planning to be UK’s biggest mobile phone operator. This caused people to contact Orange and ask if there will be sudden changes to their existing subscriptions. The staff at Orange explained that there will be no negative effect on their plans and the company’s name may be retained for at least several months more. But eventually, the collaboration with the German telecom company T-mobile will create a new and merged brand called “Everything Everywhere.” Naturally, some loyal Orange patrons are planning to switch in case there may be unwelcome announcements.
My uncle is one of those people who see this move as unappealing. He says that there may be changes that would cause him to be unable to use his Motorola Droid. He even called up the Motorola helpline to clarify the issue, but the agent on the phone declined to comment on this. He also called up Orange to ask about this. The representative assured my paranoid uncle that he has nothing to worry about. Although it still isn’t clear what this corporate move will bring about to users, he hopes it will bring more benefits rather than just costs.
